In the quiet neighborhood of Fairfax, Virginia, a grim discovery was made on a hot summer day in July 2016, unraveling a tragic story of a father and his young daughter. Roy Eugene Rumsey, a 58-year-old man, was found deceased inside his burning home on Fairfax Hunt Road. Alongside him, authorities found the body of a female toddler, later identified as his two-year-old daughter, Kyra Franchetti.
Neighbors reported seeing flames erupting from the back of the house and the roof on the
morning of July 27th. Firefighters battled the intense blaze for a considerable time. Once the fire was under control, a search of the charred remains of the single-family home led to the heartbreaking discovery of the two bodies in an upstairs bedroom. The investigation into the fire quickly took a dark turn as fire marshals determined that the fire had been intentionally set.
Further investigation by the Fairfax County police revealed the incident to be a murder-suicide. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that both Roy Rumsey and his daughter, Kyra, had died from gunshot wounds. Authorities concluded that Rumsey murdered his daughter before taking his own life. He was a defense contractor who reportedly had minimal interaction with his neighbors and had experienced disputes with the local neighborhood association. It was noted that Rumsey and his ex-wife had divorced in 2012, and they did not have any children together. His daughter, Kyra, was visiting him at the time of the incident. As the perpetrator in the murder-suicide, Roy Rumsey was the sole suspect, and consequently, there were no arrests to be made in the case.
