On a cold February evening in Fairfax, Virginia, a heated argument in an apartment complex parking lot shattered the night's quiet, leaving a 39-year-old man, Johnny Lee Robinson III, fatally wounded. The incident, which occurred on February 10, 2022, in the 3300 block of Willow Crescent Drive, was preceded by an audible dispute between a man and a woman, which tragically culminated in a single gunshot.
Responding to a 911 call around 8:12 p.m., Fairfax County police officers discovered
Robinson suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a woman fleeing the area immediately after the shot was fired. An extensive search of the vicinity, involving K9 units and a police helicopter, led to the discovery of a suitcase and a firearm believed to be connected to the shooting.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed Robinson and the woman, who were known to each other, leaving an apartment together shortly before the altercation. Neither Robinson nor the suspect resided at the complex. Through witness information and the gathered evidence, detectives identified 23-year-old Kaitlynn Nicole Nicholas of Harrisonburg as the suspect.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, authorities tracked Nicholas to Harrisonburg, where she had reportedly traveled using a ride-hailing service. On February 11, 2022, detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department's Fugitive Track and Apprehension Unit, in collaboration with the Harrisonburg Police Department, took Nicholas into custody. She was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
