In the early hours of a summer morning in Norfolk, Virginia, a gathering of numerous people at a house party in the 800 block of West 36th Street took a tragic turn. Twenty-seven-year-old Anthony L. Long, a man from Virginia Beach, was present at the event when an argument broke out, shattering the festive atmosphere. The verbal dispute escalated horrifically as multiple gunshots rang through the home, sowing chaos and fear among the partygoers.
In the aftermath of the shooting on June
27, 2015, Anthony L. Long was found to have sustained a serious gunshot wound. He was rushed to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters for medical attention. Despite the efforts of hospital officials, Long succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Another man, who was 34 years old at the time, was also injured in the shooting and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in stable condition.
The Norfolk Police Detectives launched an active investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of two suspects within a couple of days. Kendall H. Hines Jr., who was 31 years old and a resident of Portsmouth, was taken into custody and charged with the second-degree murder of Anthony L. Long. Additionally, Hines faced charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
A second suspect, 21-year-old Edmond J. Johnson of Norfolk, was also arrested in connection with the incident. Johnson was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. Both Kendall H. Hines Jr. and Edmond J. Johnson were held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond following their arrests.
