Lauren Ashley McCain was a 20-year-old freshman at Virginia Tech, majoring in international studies. Originally from Hampton, Virginia, she had moved around throughout her childhood due to her father's career in the Navy, living in Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas before her family settled in Virginia. She was a member of the Choctaw Nation. Known for her bright and loving personality, Lauren was described by her family as an extremely intelligent and happy young woman who was a fun person to be
around. She was deeply committed to her faith and was known to radiate a love that touched everyone who knew her.
On the morning of April 16, 2007, Lauren was in her German class in Norris Hall on the Virginia Tech campus. It was there that she, along with her instructor and three other students, was shot and killed. Her death was part of a mass shooting that became the deadliest in modern U.S. history at the time, with a total of 32 victims losing their lives before the gunman took his own. The perpetrator was identified as Seung-Hui Cho, a 23-year-old senior at the university.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, there were no arrests to be made in connection with Lauren's death, as the person responsible had died by suicide at the scene. The investigation that followed focused on the timeline of events and the motives of the shooter. The incident led to a nationwide re-evaluation of campus security protocols and mental health services for students. Lauren's family, including her parents and siblings, were left to mourn the loss of a young woman who was just beginning her adult life and was known for her kindness, intelligence, and vibrant spirit.
