On a warm August evening in 2009, 18-year-old Heidi Lynn Childs, a Caucasian female and a sophomore at Virginia Tech, and her friend, 19-year-old David Metzler, drove to Caldwell Fields, a serene and isolated recreational area within the Jefferson National Forest. The two had met in high school through their church youth group and had recently begun dating as they both attended college.
That evening, on August 26, 2009, in a gravel parking lot popular with students, their lives were tragically cut short when they were both shot to death.
The following morning, a person walking their dog discovered the couple's bodies and alerted the authorities. Investigators determined that Metzler had been shot while in the driver's seat of his 1992 Toyota Camry, and Childs was shot as she tried to flee. While Metzler's wallet was left behind, Childs' purse, containing her cell phone, camera, credit cards, and Virginia Tech ID on a lanyard, was missing. These personal items have never been recovered.
The investigation into the double homicide, often referred to as the "Caldwell Fields murders," has been extensive, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Virginia State Police and the FBI. Despite numerous interviews and the identification of persons of interest and suspects in Montgomery, Craig, and Roanoke counties, the case has remained unsolved for over a decade. Investigators revealed that the weapon used was a. 30-30 rifle and that they had recovered the killer's DNA from the crime scene.
Over the years, law enforcement has made public appeals for information, at one point releasing details about several vehicles of interest seen in the area on the night of the murders. A substantial reward of $100,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
