In the quiet town of Blacksburg, Virginia, the promising life of 17-year-old Serenity Hawley was tragically cut short on November 7, 2023. A senior at Blacksburg High School, she was a vibrant and beloved member of her community, known for her involvement in Young Life and as the Vice President of member recruitment for DECA. With a recent acceptance to Virginia Tech, her future appeared bright.
She was also a cherished employee at a local restaurant, Your Pie.
On that Tuesday afternoon, Serenity was found in her car in a parking garage, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Alongside her was the body of her ex-boyfriend, a junior and former varsity football player at the same high school. Authorities recovered a weapon inside the vehicle and quickly determined there was no ongoing threat to the community, indicating the event was a murder-suicide. The ex-boyfriend, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified by Serenity's family as the person responsible for her death. Due to his age, police did not publicly release his name.
The tragedy unfolded just two days before what would have been Serenity's 18th birthday, a celebration she was planning to enjoy with her older sister at a Virginia Tech women's basketball game. In the wake of her death, it was revealed that there had been previous concerns about her safety. Her mother stated that the school had issued a no-contact order between Serenity and her ex-boyfriend approximately a month before the incident. She had also encouraged her daughter to seek a formal restraining order.
The devastating event prompted a community-wide reflection on teen dating violence. In response to a petition with over 1,700 signatures, the Montgomery County School board initiated a third-party investigation into the school division's handling of the events leading up to the deaths. The investigation's findings, released in a public statement, pointed to 'systemic failures within the school division related to Title IX compliance and the initiation of threat assessments.' Serenity's family expressed the hope that her story would serve as a catalyst for conversations about domestic and emotional abuse, urging others to recognize the warning signs and prevent similar tragedies.
