On December 8, 2011, Virginia Tech Police Officer Deriek W. Crouse, a 39-year-old male, was fatally shot in his patrol car while conducting a traffic stop on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech. An Army veteran and a married father of five, Officer Crouse was a respected member of the law enforcement community, having served with the Virginia Tech Police Department for four years.
The tragic event unfolded around 12:15 p.m. in a parking lot near Cassell Coliseum.
While Officer Crouse was seated in his unmarked vehicle, a man who was not associated with the traffic stop approached and shot him. The gunman then fled the scene on foot. This unprovoked attack prompted a campus-wide lockdown as law enforcement from multiple agencies responded to the active shooter situation.
The suspect was later identified as 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley, a student from a nearby university. Approximately 45 minutes after the shooting of Officer Crouse, a Montgomery County sheriff's deputy spotted Ashley in another campus parking lot. As the deputy approached, Ashley took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ballistics testing confirmed that the same handgun was used in both the killing of Officer Crouse and Ashley's suicide.
An investigation into the incident revealed that Ashley had stolen a car at gunpoint the day before the shooting. However, authorities could not establish any connection between Ashley and Officer Crouse, nor could they determine a motive for the seemingly random act of violence. The firearm used in the murder-suicide was also recovered at the scene where Ashley's body was found. The investigation concluded that Ashley acted alone and his death closed the case, leaving a grieving community and family to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer.
