Juan Ramon Ortiz, a 26-year-old male graduate student from Puerto Rico, was tragically killed in Blacksburg, Virginia. His life was cut short on April 16, 2007, during the mass shooting that occurred on the campus of Virginia Tech. Ortiz was in an Advanced Hydrology class when he was fatally shot by student Seung-Hui Cho, who went on a rampage, killing 32 people before taking his own life.
Originally from Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Ortiz was a dedicated student pursuing his master's degree
in Civil Engineering at the university. He had recently married in August of 2006 and had moved to Blacksburg with his wife to continue his education. Known for his passion for his field and his vibrant personality, he was remembered by his family as an extraordinary son. Beyond his academic pursuits, he was a talented musician, playing the timbales in a salsa band with his father.
The incident that claimed Ortiz's life was a meticulously planned attack by a lone gunman. The shooter, a 23-year-old student at the university, armed himself with two pistols and carried out two separate attacks on campus. The rampage ended when the perpetrator committed suicide, leaving a devastating toll of fatalities and injuries. In the aftermath, there were no suspects to be arrested as the person responsible had ended his own life. The event remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
