Derrick Lamont McFarland, a 32-year-old security guard, tragically lost his life on August 20, 2006, in Blacksburg, Virginia. McFarland was fatally shot while on duty at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The incident occurred during an escape attempt by William Morva, a prisoner who was being treated at the hospital's emergency room.
