In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Newport News, Virginia, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew and loved the 27-year-old Black man, Reginald Turner. On September 23, 2012, what began as a social gathering at a house party devolved into a fatal encounter for Turner.
The evening had been underway at a residence in the 1200 block of 25th Street when an argument broke out involving Turner and a group of other individuals.
The disagreement spilled out from the confines of the house and onto the street, where the verbal altercation escalated with shocking suddenness to gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Turner was struck by multiple bullets to the chest.
When police officers arrived at the scene near the intersection of 25th Street and Oak Avenue around 2:30 a.m., they found Turner grievously wounded. He was rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life, but the severity of his injuries proved to be too great, and he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators were left with few leads. Authorities reported at the time that they had no information about the suspect or suspects involved in the deadly shooting.
