In the early morning hours of June 23, 2024, the life of 34-year-old Wayne Hill, a Black male from Hampton, was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. At approximately 2:13 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night in the 700 block of 36th Street, triggering a ShotSpotter alert that dispatched Newport News police to the scene. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hill suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Newport News Police Department subsequently launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Despite their efforts, authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects in connection with Hill's death, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains active, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the Crime Line or submit anonymous tips through the P3 Tips app.
In the wake of his untimely passing, funeral services were held to honor Wayne Hill's memory. A viewing was held on June 30, 2024, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel in Newport News, followed by a funeral service at the same location on July 1, 2024. He was later interred at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The community continues to await answers and seek justice for the killing of Wayne Hill.
