A sense of unease settled over the 700 block of 30th Street in Newport News, Virginia, on the night of Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Shortly before 11 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the night, prompting a 911 call to the Newport News Police Department. Officers on patrol near the Marshall Court Apartments also heard the gunfire and responded to the scene.
Inside a residence, they discovered two victims of the shooting.
Twenty-one-year-old Brandon Peter Dudley had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. A second victim, a 19-year-old male, was also struck by a single gunshot but was expected to recover from his injuries.
According to the initial investigation, Dudley had heard a noise in the alley beside the house and went to a window to look out. It was then that several shots were fired into the residence, striking both him and the other young man. In the immediate aftermath, police had no information about a potential gunman or a motive for the shooting, and the case was investigated as a homicide.
Brandon Dudley was a resident of Newport News and a father to a young son. In the years that have followed his death, there have been no publicly available reports of any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with his murder, leaving his case unsolved.
