In the late hours of a Monday night in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 22-year-old Micah L. Grant was tragically cut short. On June 12, 2023, gunshots echoed through the Kingstown apartment complex on Oscar Loop, near the city's Center District. When police arrived at the scene of the midnight shooting, they discovered two men who had been shot.
Both were transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries.
Micah Grant, a resident of Newport News, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The second man who was shot survived. Investigators worked through the following day, collecting evidence from the scene, which included bullet holes in apartment windows and the removal of entire doors for forensic examination. His death marked at least the 13th homicide in the city that year.
In the wake of the shooting, residents of the apartment complex expressed their concerns about security issues in the area. As of the initial investigation, Newport News police had not charged anyone in connection with the homicide.
