In the summer of 2022, the life of 35-year-old Shanitia Mikell Eure-Lewis of Newport News, Virginia, came to a tragic end. A mother of two teenage sons, she was a beloved member of her community and her church. On the morning of Sunday, July 17, 2022, she attended the 8 a.m. service at Gethsemane Baptist Church. She told fellow churchgoers she was going home briefly and planned to return for the 10:15 a.m. service, but she was never seen alive by her loved ones again.
Her family's concern grew when they were unable to reach her, a behavior they described as highly uncharacteristic.
The investigation into her disappearance quickly focused on her husband, Adrian Salvatore Lewis. Witnesses reported seeing Shanitia leaving her residence with her husband at approximately 9:40 a.m. on the day she vanished. The situation escalated when, on July 18, investigators located the vehicle they were traveling in and discovered evidence that transitioned the case from a missing person investigation to a homicide. That same day, Adrian Lewis was apprehended at Washington Dulles International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica. A search of his luggage revealed his wife's passport and credit cards.
Further investigation uncovered a disturbing series of events leading up to Shanitia's disappearance. On July 4, she had informed her husband of her desire for a divorce. In the days that followed, she moved firearms from their home to her sister's residence for safekeeping and had her children stay there as well. Authorities later found some of Shanitia's personal items, including her purse and sandals, along with a shovel, in a dumpster. A search of Adrian's truck revealed the presence of his wife's blood and a bullet casing. Investigators also discovered that in the week leading up to her disappearance, Adrian had searched online for topics such as murder sentences in Virginia and the effects of a gunshot wound to the head.
Adrian Lewis was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During his trial in September 2023, the jury heard testimony about his suspicions of his wife's infidelity and threats he had made to kill her. Despite the fact that Shanitia's body has never been found, the evidence presented was compelling enough for the jury to return a guilty verdict on the charge of first-degree murder after only an hour of deliberation. He was, however, acquitted of the firearm charge as the cause of death could not be definitively determined without her body. In January 2024, Adrian Lewis was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife. The court also ordered that he have no contact with his children until they turn 18 and no uninvited contact thereafter.
