In the early morning hours of October 13, 2012, a sense of unease settled over the Colony Square Apartments in Newport News, Virginia. It was there, in the stark quiet of the parking lot, that 49-year-old Patrick McWanza Hewett’s life was tragically cut short. Just after 1:00 a.m., police responded to calls and discovered Hewett lying in the street, suffering from gunshot wounds.
