In the coastal city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the life of a beloved pharmacist was cut tragically short in a brazen act of violence. David Kilgore, a 46-year-old male, was at his place of business, Beach Pharmacy, on April 14, 2014, when a man entered with the intent to rob the establishment. The man, later identified as 55-year-old Walter Lane Hubbard, was seeking prescription medication to fuel a powerful addiction.
Hubbard approached the pharmacy counter and demanded Oxycodone. When David Kilgore refused to dispense the narcotics, Hubbard produced a firearm and shot the pharmacist. Despite being mortally wounded, Kilgore managed to alert someone he was on the phone with that a robbery was in progress. The violent encounter ended with Kilgore succumbing to his injuries, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated by the sudden and senseless loss.
Following the fatal shooting, Hubbard fled the scene and proceeded to rob a second nearby pharmacy. His desperate attempt to evade justice led police on a dangerous high-speed chase. During the pursuit, Hubbard fired multiple shots at the pursuing officers, further escalating the gravity of his crimes. The chase came to an end when law enforcement successfully deployed spike strips, causing Hubbard to crash the stolen vehicle he was driving. He was then taken into custody.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Walter Lane Hubbard faced a litany of serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of David Kilgore, attempted capital murder of a police officer for firing at law enforcement, robbery, and several firearm offenses. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. During the sentencing phase, letters written by Hubbard from jail were presented, which revealed a disturbing lack of remorse for his actions. The court handed down a sentence of life in prison plus an additional 48 years, ensuring that he would be held accountable for the tragic and irreversible consequences of his choices.
