On a Tuesday morning, January 3, 2006, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm near the intersection of Old Virginia Beach Road and Barberton Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia. At approximately 8:30 a.m., police received a report and responded to the scene to find a man lying in the roadway. The man, identified as 34-year-old Shawn Gary John, a Black male who lived near the area, was bleeding and unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
