In the early morning hours of November 8, 2014, the life of 27-year-old Mark Joyner, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Emergency dispatchers received a call around 5:30 a.m. about a man lying in a grassy area in front of an apartment building on DeWald Circle at Monarch Crossing. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered Joyner suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately 30 minutes
