In the late summer of 2015, a quiet Newport News, Virginia, neighborhood was disrupted by a tragic discovery that left a community in mourning and a family seeking answers that have yet to come. On August 29th, 20-year-old Nickeia Hunter, a Black female from Hampton, was found dead inside a home on Wickham Avenue. She was not alone; with her was 16-year-old Demonte Chambers, who also resided at the home.
Police were called to the scene at approximately 5:45 p.m.
after a caller reported seeing one of the victims inside the house. Upon their arrival, officers found both Hunter and Chambers had sustained gunshot wounds to the head. While the medical examiner swiftly ruled Nickeia Hunter's death a homicide, the determination of the manner of Demonte's death remained under investigation in the immediate aftermath. Hunter was an acquaintance of Chambers and was visiting him at the residence where their lives were tragically cut short.
In the years that have passed since the incident, the investigation into Nickeia Hunter's death has remained open. Law enforcement has released limited information about the case and, to date, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with her homicide. The Newport News Police Department has encouraged anyone with information to come forward, but the case has grown cold. The community continues to remember the vibrant young woman whose future was stolen, while her family is left without closure, still waiting for justice to be served.
