In the early morning hours of August 29, 2021, the life of Evita Natasha Wilkins, a 27-year-old Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 13200 block of Aqueduct Drive just before 2:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Evita suffering from serious injuries. She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries.
Known affectionately as 'Fatty' to her loved ones, Evita was remembered as a vibrant and artistic mother of two young sons, Zion and Zakai. Described as having a personality that could light up any room, she was a devoted mother whose life revolved around her children. At the time of her death, she was a manager in training at Zaxby's. Her family and friends were left shocked and devastated by the senseless act of violence that took her from them.
In the wake of the shooting, the Newport News Police Department launched an intensive investigation, going door-to-door to interview neighbors and seek out any potential witnesses. The community came together to mourn the loss of the young mother, holding vigils and walks to honor her memory and to plead for justice. A GoFundMe was established to assist her family with funeral expenses and to provide support for her two sons.
Despite the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the heartfelt pleas from her family and community for information, no arrests have been made in connection with Evita's murder. The suspect or suspects responsible for her death remain unidentified. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward to help bring closure to her grieving family.
