On April 7, 2023, at approximately 2:55 a.m., Newport News police responded to reports of a shooting in the 3000 block of Madison Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 46-year-old Kyna Chanele McGowan outside, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3:00 a.m.
