In the early morning hours of April 7, 2023, the life of 46-year-old Kyna Chanele McGowan was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 3000 block of Madison Avenue at approximately 2:55 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered McGowan outside, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene just minutes later, at 3:01 a.m.
The investigation into the death of the Black female quickly pointed towards a
suspect. Following a thorough investigation, authorities identified 58-year-old Lisa Evette Boothe of Hampton as the individual allegedly responsible for McGowan's death. Just ten days after the fatal shooting, on April 17, 2023, Boothe was taken into custody without incident in the neighboring city of Hampton.
Following her arrest, Lisa Evette Boothe was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. She was subsequently held at the Newport News City Jail. In the wake of this violence, the Newport News Police Department organized a Community Awareness and Response Engagement Walk on April 10, 2023. This event aimed to bring the community together, address concerns, and foster a sense of solidarity and healing in the neighborhood where Kyna Chanele McGowan lost her life.
