On November 6, 2023, Newport News police responded to a reported shooting at a residence on Canterbury Run. Upon arrival, officers discovered 76-year-old Matilda Georgeta Chirila and her 77-year-old husband, Mircea Valeriu Chirila, deceased from gunshot wounds in an upstairs bathroom. The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, with no threat to the community and no suspects being sought.
