In the Ocean View neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, a burst of gunfire on a Wednesday afternoon, September 9, 2015, tragically ended the life of 19-year-old Coraun J. Poole. Poole, a Black male, was discovered with gunshot wounds in the Ashley Trace Apartment complex on East Leicester Avenue. Emergency responders rushed him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a violent exchange between two men.
Poole and 23-year-old James Carter-Pristell were involved in a gunfight that left both of them shot. When police arrived at the scene around 1:20 p.m. after receiving calls about shots fired, they found Carter-Pristell injured. He was also transported to the hospital and survived. The aftermath of the shootout was evident, with neighbors reporting hearing the gunshots and investigators finding multiple bullet holes inside the stairwell of an apartment building where Poole was reportedly carried from by individuals trying to help him before medical aid arrived.
In the days following the incident, detectives arrested James Carter-Pristell in connection with Poole's death. He was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Carter-Pristell was held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond. Ultimately, the legal process found Carter-Pristell guilty of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. For these convictions, he was sentenced to serve six years in prison.
