On a Wednesday morning in Bismarck, North Dakota, the life of a 22-year-old Caucasian male, Michael Shane, was tragically cut short. The events of March 23, 2022, unfolded in the parking lot of the Hawken Street Apartment Complex, shattering the morning's calm with the sound of gunfire. When police arrived around 8:50 a.m., they discovered Shane's body, felled by a fatal gunshot wound.
Another man, who was 30 years old, was also wounded in the incident but survived his injuries.
The violence stemmed from a dispute over a woman and a cell phone. The man later arrested in connection with the shooting, 26-year-old Kyle Riley, had driven to the apartment complex with a female companion to get her phone from Shane. An argument escalated into a physical confrontation when Shane and his friend approached the pickup truck Riley was driving. According to a witness, Riley fired a gun from the window of the truck. Riley later told police that he panicked and fired his 9mm pistol when Shane reached into the truck through a partially open window and opened the door. The shots struck Shane in the chest and also injured the other man.
Following the shooting, Riley fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle shortly after. Investigators quickly identified him as the suspect and set up surveillance. A few hours later, around 12:24 p.m., officers spotted a person matching Riley's description getting into a car and initiated a traffic stop, taking him into custody without further incident.
Kyle Riley was arrested and initially charged with murder and aggravated assault. In May 2023, he accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, as well as aggravated assault. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in Michael Shane's death. In the wake of the tragedy, family and friends gathered to celebrate Shane's life, remembering a young man taken too soon by a senseless act of violence.
