In the early hours of a cold November morning in Bismarck, North Dakota, the life of Caine Fischer, a 30-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. On November 16, 2015, Fischer was found deceased in a residence in the 600 block of North 22nd Street. The grim discovery was made by a woman who awoke to find her ex-husband, Kirk Kwasniewski, in her home armed with a gun.
It was then she found her boyfriend, Fischer, dead.
The incident was rooted in a domestic dispute, as Fischer was dating Kwasniewski's estranged wife, who had recently served him with divorce papers. Just prior to the homicide, Kwasniewski had reportedly choked and punched his estranged wife, for which she had received hospital treatment. After killing Fischer, Kwasniewski fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement who advised residents in the area to remain in their homes and lock their doors.
The search for the suspect, 35-year-old Kirk Kwasniewski, ended later that same day in Dunn County. Authorities were able to locate him after he made a 911 hang-up call. His vehicle was found abandoned near the entrance to Little Missouri State Park, and his body was discovered nearby. Investigators concluded that Kwasniewski died by suicide. An autopsy was planned for Caine Fischer the following day to officially determine the cause of death in the homicide.
