On September 23, 2022, 28-year-old Maurice Richard Thunder Shield, known as "Mogli," was fatally shot at the Motel 6 in Bismarck, North Dakota. The incident occurred during a confrontation between Thunder Shield and 16-year-old Jesse Taylor Jr., both of whom were staying at the motel. Witnesses reported that Taylor fired multiple gunshots, four of which struck Thunder Shield, resulting in his death. A bystander, Frederick Loewy, was also injured when a bullet grazed his leg.
