On a June morning in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy struck the Grandy Village neighborhood. On June 18, 2024, 32-year-old Bobby Lee Hill, a man who used a wheelchair, was fatally shot in the 3100 block of Kimball Terrace. The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. when officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a gunshot victim. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr.
Hill suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Bobby Lee Hill led to a swift arrest. Less than five hours after the shooting, Norfolk Police took 27-year-old Michael A. Lewis Jr. into custody in the City of Suffolk. Security camera footage from the area played a crucial role in identifying the suspect. The footage captured a man exiting a vehicle, approaching Mr. Hill, and shooting him at near-contact range before fleeing in the same car. Investigators were able to track the vehicle to an apartment complex where Lewis resided and recovered a 9mm handgun from his home. Forensic testing confirmed it was the weapon used in the murder.
Following his arrest, Michael A. Lewis Jr. was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He waived his Miranda rights and admitted to being the shooter, though a motive for the killing was never determined. On February 25, 2025, Lewis pleaded guilty to the charges against him. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed not to pursue a first-degree murder charge. On May 23, 2025, a Norfolk Circuit Court Judge sentenced Lewis to 30 years in prison, with an additional 13 years suspended. His sentence also includes three years of supervised probation upon release and the condition of maintaining good behavior for 30 years.
