In the early morning hours of July 2, 2016, a sense of unease settled over the 1100 block of Church Street in Norfolk, Virginia. A call came in to emergency dispatchers just after 2:30 a.m. about a possible gunshot victim, shattering the quiet of the night. When police arrived at the scene near Princess Anne Road, they discovered 22-year-old Daquan Anthony Martin inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Paramedics rushed the young man to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but his
injuries to the head and neck proved to be fatal. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving behind a loving family, including two children. Martin was remembered as someone who had a passion for football.
As the investigation into the shooting began, details emerged of a second victim. A 21-year-old man had also been shot during the incident. He was transported to a local hospital by a third party for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The connection between the two victims and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remained unclear to the public.
Despite the initial investigation and pleas to the public for information, the case has grown cold. Detectives have not released any description of a suspect or suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide.
