In the late hours of a summer evening in Norfolk, Virginia, the life of a young Black/African American man, Tabari C. Anthony, aged 21, was tragically cut short. On the night of August 8, 2020, sometime around 11:15 p.m., a violent encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Wawa convenience store located at 3360 E. Princess Anne Road. During this incident, Anthony sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Following the shooting, Anthony arrived at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on August 9, 2020. The Norfolk Police Department was notified of the gunshot victim's arrival at the hospital shortly before 11:30 p.m. on August 8th and promptly began an investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
The investigation into Anthony's death led detectives to identify a suspect. A few days later, on August 12, 2020, the Norfolk Police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Joseph K. Pagano of Norfolk. Pagano was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, Pagano was held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond. Authorities did not immediately release a motive or the specific circumstances that precipitated the deadly shooting as they continued their investigation.
