In the winter of 2021, a family dispute in Norfolk, Virginia, culminated in a tragic end for 31-year-old Kevin Michael Gumbs. The male victim was visiting his younger brother, Gregory Alexander Mayo, but their time together was marred by what was described as Mayo's concerning behavior. This unease prompted Gumbs to make plans to return to his home in New York.
On the evening of February 11, 2021, an attempt to purchase a bus ticket at a station in Virginia Beach proved unsuccessful,
forcing Gumbs to return to his brother's residence. Later that night, he reached out to another family member for a ride back to the bus station, but they were unable to assist him. That was the last time any family member heard from him. After 9 p.m., the sound of six gunshots echoed through the neighborhood, captured by a nearby home surveillance system.
The following day, on February 12, a neighbor made a grim discovery, finding Gumbs' body concealed under a tarp outside. An autopsy would later confirm that he had sustained six gunshot wounds to his torso, and abrasions on his back suggested that his body had been dragged.
In the wake of the discovery, family members confronted Gregory Mayo about his brother's death. During this confrontation, Mayo admitted to shooting Gumbs, stating that his brother had been 'disrespectful.' Norfolk Police arrested Mayo on February 13, 2021, and a search of his home uncovered a 9mm pistol and multiple cartridge casings. Forensic analysis later confirmed that the casings found at the scene and the bullets recovered from Gumbs' body were fired from Mayo's pistol.
Gregory A. Mayo, who was 29 at the time of the incident, was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of murder. He later pleaded no contest to the charges and was found guilty.
