In the late hours of June 1, 2018, the Calvert Square neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire. Responding to a call just before midnight, police discovered 31-year-old Maurice Hyman lying in the 900 block of Bagnall Road with a gunshot wound. He was a Black / African American man. Emergency services transported him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
While at the scene, investigators learned that a second man, also 31 years old, had arrived at the same hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound from the same incident.
Five days later, on June 6, 2018, Maurice Hyman succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death was officially classified as a homicide. The investigation into the double shooting and subsequent homicide has yet to yield any suspects, and the Norfolk Police have encouraged anyone with information to come forward. The case remains an open investigation.
Adding a layer of complexity to the tragedy, Hyman had been connected to a fatal shooting in the very same area the previous year. In April 2017, he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the death of 34-year-old Zuton T. Carpenter. However, the charges against Hyman in that case were ultimately dropped, and he was released. Despite the parallels in location, authorities have not publicly identified a suspect in Hyman's killing.
