In the late hours of a Monday evening in Norfolk, Virginia, a domestic argument escalated into a tragedy that would claim the life of 18-year-old Rasaun Davidson. On October 7, 2019, dispatchers received a call around 11:45 p.m. reporting two individuals with possible gunshot wounds in the 600 block of Mariners Way. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Rasaun Davidson and an adult woman with apparent gunshot wounds.
While the woman was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Rasaun was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the arrest of 56-year-old George Antonio Boyd of Norfolk. The incident was determined to be domestic in nature. The events of that night began with an argument between Boyd and Rasaun's mother, Khalana Smith, in their shared home. One of Ms. Smith's daughters called her father for help to leave the house with her mother and siblings. When the father arrived with Rasaun, the young man went upstairs to confront Boyd. As his father was getting everyone out of the house, Boyd armed himself with a handgun. As Rasaun was leaving the house, Boyd shot him once in the back of the head from the staircase. He then went outside and shot Ms. Smith in the neck, which resulted in her being rendered a quadriplegic.
George Antonio Boyd was taken into custody at the scene after complying with police commands to drop his weapon. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. It was also discovered that Boyd was a convicted felon and was illegally in possession of a firearm. On June 24, 2022, Boyd pleaded guilty to the charges against him. In December 2022, he was sentenced to 38 active years in prison for the murder of Rasaun Davidson and the malicious wounding of his mother.
