On the night of August 16, 2024, in Norfolk, Virginia, a young life was tragically cut short. John E. Daughtry III, an 18-year-old Black male, was found suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound in the 5100 block of East Virginia Beach Boulevard. The call came in to the Norfolk Police Department at approximately 11:50 p.m. reporting a gunshot victim. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the gravely injured teenager.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide of John E. Daughtry III, known affectionately to his family as 'Fatman' and to his friends as 'Johnny2Littt,' led detectives on a months-long search for those responsible. He was remembered as a loving and affectionate individual who had attended local schools, including Ingleside Elementary and Booker T. Washington High School. He had a passion for boxing and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The community was deeply affected by his untimely death, with many expressing concerns over local violence.
Months after the fatal shooting, the Norfolk Police Department announced a significant breakthrough in the case. On December 19, 2024, they arrested 21-year-old Nasir E. Parker of Norfolk. He was taken into custody in the 2700 block of Princess Anne Road. Following the arrest, Parker was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm, robbery, and conspiracy. He was subsequently held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
The investigation did not end there. On January 29, 2025, a second suspect was apprehended by Norfolk Police in Virginia Beach. Kevin J. Walker Jr., an 18-year-old from Virginia Beach, was arrested and faced the same serious charges as Parker: second-degree murder, robbery, conspiracy, and two counts of use of a firearm. Like Parker, Walker was also held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond, bringing a measure of progress in the quest for justice for the death of John E. Daughtry III.
