In the quiet community of Bohannon, Virginia, a devastating incident cut short the life of 13-year-old Jordan Hale Stewart. On the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 2015, Jordan, a male seventh-grade student at Thomas Hunter Middle School, was fatally wounded in what was reported as a hunting accident. He was in the woods on private land off of Myrtle Grove Avenue with his 17-year-old cousin at the time of the incident.
According to reports, the two cousins were hunting for deer.
Jordan had reportedly crouched down and taken a shot at a deer. As he stood up, his cousin also fired, accidentally striking him. The sound of two gunshots alerted neighbors, who then witnessed the family rushing from their home in a state of devastation. Jordan was surrounded by his loving family and special friends when he passed away. An investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Officers were seen at the location the following day with metal detectors.
Jordan was remembered as a young man with a knack for making people laugh and who could always bring a smile to anyone's face. He had a deep love for the outdoors, frequently hunting and fishing with the ambition of catching a 'big buck.' During the summer months, he was known for cutting grass for family, friends, and neighbors. He was also an avid baseball player, participating in the Mathews Little League from a young age as a pitcher and outfielder.
The community mourned the loss of the young boy. Grief counselors were made available at his middle school to help students and staff cope with the tragic news. His funeral was held on Monday, November 23, 2015, at Salem United Methodist Church, followed by a burial in Christ Church Cemetery. While the incident was investigated, there have been no publicly available reports of any arrests being made or charges being filed in connection with the tragic death of Jordan Stewart.
