On a day that began like many others for an avid outdoorsman, tragedy struck in the woods of Warsaw, Virginia, forever altering the lives of two families. It was January 2, 2016, when 60-year-old Keith Joseph Williams, a resident of Mechanicsville and a dedicated employee of Hanover County Public Utilities since 1994, joined a large, organized deer hunting group in the Suggetts Point area of Richmond County.
An experienced hunter, Williams was participating in an activity he loved, and on this particular occasion, was even providing meat for Hunters for the Hungry.
During the hunt, another member of the party, 45-year-old Wavely Alphonso Veney Jr. of Washington D.C., discharged his 12-gauge shotgun. The buckshot struck Williams in the chest and pelvis. Despite both men wearing blaze orange for safety, Veney reportedly mistook Williams for a deer. The gravity of the situation was immediately apparent, and Williams was airlifted to VCU Medical Center for emergency treatment. Tragically, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them.
The investigation that followed the fatal shooting revealed a number of violations on the part of Veney. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries conducted a thorough inquiry into the incident, which led to a series of charges against him. Veney was arrested and booked at the Northern Neck Regional Jail without bond. The charges he faced were extensive and included involuntary manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm, and attempting to take a deer unlawfully. Furthermore, it was discovered that Veney was hunting without the proper licenses and was in violation of a protective order.
