In the early morning hours of January 4, 2016, the life of 25-year-old Dashanika Sherrod, a female resident of Newport News, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Just after 1:30 a.m., a man known to Sherrod forced his way into her apartment and fatally shot her. The violence unfolded in the presence of Sherrod's mother and her two young children, who were inside the residence at the time but were not physically harmed.
