In the early hours of a summer night in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy struck a 17-year-old male named Don Demetrius Brown Jr., who was of Black/African American descent. On June 21, 2016, just after midnight, the sound of gunshots pierced the air in the 400 block of North Military Highway. When police arrived, they discovered a chaotic scene with two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One of those was Brown Jr., who was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead.
The shooting left two other people injured, though their wounds were not considered life-threatening. One of the surviving victims was found at the scene with Brown Jr., while the other was taken to a different hospital by an acquaintance. His resource teacher at Renaissance Academy recalled his positive demeanor and his ability to make everyone laugh. While police did take one man in for questioning, no arrests have been made in the years following the shooting. The case remains an active investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified, leaving a painful lack of closure for a family and community still mourning the loss of a young life cut short by violence.
