Among those present was 29-year-old Timothy Leroy Coats, a Black male known for his entrepreneurial drive and artistic talents.
The date was February 27, 2023, a day that would end in senseless violence and the loss of a life.
Without any warning or apparent provocation, the camaraderie of the gathering was shattered. Another man at the get-together, 29-year-old Jerico Simmons, abruptly stood up, pulled a firearm from his waistband, and fired a single, fatal shot at Timothy Coats. The bullet struck Coats in the head, and chaos immediately ensued. Simmons, accompanied by another individual, fled the scene, leaving Coats critically wounded. First responders rushed Coats to a local hospital, but the damage was irreversible. He was pronounced brain-dead the following day and was subsequently removed from life support. The Allen County Coroner's Office officially ruled his death a homicide.
The search for Jerico Simmons did not last long. After fleeing the scene of the shooting, he was involved in a car accident on Interstate 69 near Marion, Indiana. Law enforcement officers who responded to the crash apprehended him, and a semi-automatic pistol was recovered near the site of the accident. In the months that followed, the legal process unfolded, leading to a trial. In November 2024, a jury found Jerico Simmons guilty of the murder of Timothy Leroy Coats. He faced a lengthy prison sentence for his actions, with his sentencing scheduled for later that same month.
Timothy Leroy Coats was remembered as a man with a bright future and a multifaceted personality. He had earned a certification in lawn care and was pursuing a business degree at Indiana Tech. His entrepreneurial ventures included selling cars, clothing, and accessories. Known as a lyricist and video producer, he also had a keen understanding of the law, often assisting others as a personal paralegal. He was an avid reader who valued his family and had embraced the beliefs of the Moorish community. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of his family and friends, a stark reminder of a life cut short.
