In the Providence Park neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia, the evening of Friday, November 25, 2016, was shattered by the sound of a loud crash. Richmond Police officers, who were in the area for an unrelated matter, heard the noise and responded to the 600 block of Milton Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered an overturned white Buick sedan. Outside the wrecked vehicle lay the body of 17-year-old George M. Carrington III. The young man had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager began immediately, with detectives pursuing all available leads. They quickly came to believe that the shooting was not a random act of violence. While police investigated, Carrington's mother expressed her belief that her son might have been the victim of an attempted robbery. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Carrington was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child. Just three days after his violent death, his girlfriend gave birth to his son, George Carrington IV.
In the days following the homicide, Richmond Police identified a suspect, another 17-year-old named Ishmael D. Brown. A warrant for his arrest on a charge of murder was issued, and authorities asked for the public's help in locating him. The search for Brown continued through December. On Friday, December 30, 2016, Ishmael D. Brown turned himself in to Richmond Police detectives, bringing a significant development to the investigation into the death of George Carrington III.
