In the early morning hours of February 10, 2017, the life of 25-year-old Brandon Limar Williams, a Black male from Newport News, Virginia, was tragically cut short. The fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of TJ's Sports Tavern, located at 7015 Huntington Avenue. Williams was discovered inside a car around 12:45 a.m., suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later.
The investigation into the death of Brandon Williams quickly led authorities to identify a suspect: 29-year-old Kweisi Mfume Williams of Smithfield, Virginia. The two men were not related. Reports indicate that on the night of the incident, Brandon Williams was attempting to find a lighter for the man who would ultimately take his life. The motive behind the shooting was determined to be an attempted robbery.
Following the incident, the Newport News police secured arrest warrants for Kweisi Williams on charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of attempted robbery. A manhunt ensued, and with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, Kweisi Williams was located and apprehended in South Carolina. He was taken into custody and held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center to await legal proceedings.
