In the early morning hours of July 1, 2017, the life of 23-year-old Alon Alvin Clipper was tragically cut short in a shooting that occurred in a Fredericksburg, Virginia shopping center parking lot. Clipper, a resident of King George County and a semi-professional football player, was with friends at the Greenbrier Shopping Center on Plank Road when the incident unfolded.
Just before 2 a.m., multiple shots were fired in the parking lot. Though police responded to reports of gunfire, they initially only found shell casings at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a call came from Mary Washington Hospital, reporting that a man had been brought to the emergency room with gunshot wounds. That man was Alon Clipper, who had been transported to the hospital by his friends. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
The investigation into Clipper's death led authorities to identify a primary suspect.
Stevie Montrel Adams, a 37-year-old with a prior felony conviction, was wanted on charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Law enforcement officials described Adams as being 5'11' and approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, and they offered a cash reward for information leading to his arrest. U.S. Marshals later apprehended Adams in North Carolina.
Two other individuals were also arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Tyree Whitfield, 37, of Franklin, was taken into custody and charged with being an accessory after the fact to homicide. Donna Renee Lewis, 44, also faced a felony charge of accessory after the fact of homicide and turned herself in to the Fredericksburg police. Both Whitfield and Lewis were held at regional jails following their arrests.
