In a quiet home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the lives of three roommates came to a tragic end in early June 2024. Among them was Robert John McGuire, a 77-year-old male. The grim discovery was made on the evening of Tuesday, June 4th, when deputies from the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office responded to a request for a welfare check at a residence on White Street Court. Inside, they found Mr. McGuire, along with his other two roommates, 60-year-old Gregory Scott Powell and 65-year-old Carol Anne Reese, deceased from what was described as upper body trauma.
The investigation quickly focused on their 23-year-old roommate, Alyssa Jane Venable. Concerns about Venable had been raised by a friend who reported that she had made unsettling statements. It was later revealed that Venable had also left a friend with envelopes containing cash, instructions for the care of her dog, and a note suggesting she intended to take her own life. This, coupled with evidence at the scene, led authorities to identify her as the primary suspect.
A multi-state manhunt for Venable ensued. She was considered armed and dangerous, and law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, were actively searching for her. The search came to a dramatic conclusion two days later, on June 6th, in Steuben County, New York. State troopers there spotted Venable's gray 2009 Honda Civic. When they attempted a traffic stop, she fled, leading them on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The pursuit ended after police successfully deployed a tire deflation device, causing her vehicle to crash. Venable was taken into custody without further incident and treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
Following her arrest, Alyssa Jane Venable was charged with three counts of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. She was extradited back to Virginia to face these charges. In February of the following year, Venable pleaded guilty to the murders of Robert John McGuire, Gregory Scott Powell, and Carol Anne Reese. Subsequently, she was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the murders, with an additional 14 years for the firearms charge, ensuring she would spend the remainder of her life behind bars for the violent end she brought to her three roommates.
