On a Sunday afternoon, March 26, 2023, the life of 18-year-old Jasiah Smith was tragically cut short in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Just before 3 p.m., emergency services received a call about shots being fired in the 400 block of Chadwick Court. When police arrived, they found Jasiah unresponsive in a parking space, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered CPR and other life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. At the time of his death, Jasiah was a senior at James Monroe High School with aspirations of joining the military.
The investigation into Jasiah's death led authorities to identify two teenage suspects from Fredericksburg: Aaron Carter, who was 19 at the time, and Lorenzo Brooks, who was 16. A search for the two ensued, and they were eventually apprehended in Temple Hills, Maryland, on April 20, 2023, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals.
Both were held without bond at the Upper Marlboro Corrections Center. Brooks was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, while Carter faced charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The case proceeded to a joint trial for Aaron Carter and Lorenzo Brooks in July 2024. Over the course of three days, the jury heard testimony from 27 witnesses and reviewed extensive evidence, including photographs and videos related to the shooting. On July 11, 2024, after three hours of deliberation, the jury found both Carter and Brooks guilty of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
On November 21, 2024, a judge sentenced both Aaron Carter and Lorenzo Brooks for their roles in Jasiah Smith's death. Each received a sentence of 40 years in prison with 15 years suspended for the second-degree murder charge, in addition to a three-year sentence for the firearm charge. In total, both men were sentenced to serve 28 years in prison.
