In the early hours of the Fourth of July in 2017, a celebration at a Hampton, Virginia home turned into a scene of tragedy. Devyn Andre Reed, a 21-year-old Black male, was at a large gathering in the 500 block of Patterson Avenue when gunfire erupted shortly after 12:30 a.m. a_mate_of_mine
Officers who were dispatched to the scene discovered a chaotic situation with multiple victims.
Reed was found in the side yard of the residence with a fatal gunshot wound to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other individuals, two men aged 19 and 21, another man, and a woman, also sustained gunshot wounds but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Some of the injured were transported to a local hospital by emergency services, while others made their way there on their own.
The investigation into the shooting indicated that the festive backyard party was tragically interrupted when several unknown Black males entered the property and began shooting. The motive for this violent act remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. Reed's family believes that he was ambushed and that his life had been threatened prior to the shooting.
In the years that have followed, no arrests have been announced in connection with the murder of Devyn Andre Reed. The case is still considered an active homicide investigation by the Hampton Police Division. Authorities continue to ask for the public's assistance, hoping that new information will lead to the individuals responsible for the death of the young man and the injuries sustained by the other four victims that night.
