Hector Gabriel Clemente, a 41-year-old Hispanic male, was known by his loved ones as Gabby. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was described as a kind-hearted and joyful person who brought a smile to everyone he met. He had a love for horses and enjoyed riding in his younger years. His family remembers him as someone who was always laughing and full of life.
In the early morning hours of July 18, 2018, a dispute at Kelly's Tavern in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake turned fatal.
An altercation that began inside the restaurant escalated and moved outside. During the course of the fight, Hector Clemente was shot and killed. He was a regular patron of the establishment, and his brother mentioned that he enjoyed hanging out at the bar, joking with people, and having fun.
Police quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, arresting 33-year-old Eric Joseph Bachmeier of Virginia Beach. He was taken into custody and charged with Second Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. According to Clemente's brother, the two men had a history of conflict, including a previous fight at another Kelly's Tavern location a couple of months prior. The dispute was reportedly over a girlfriend. The brother believed the restaurant was aware of the ongoing issues between the two men and could have done more to prevent the fatal encounter. Following the incident, Kelly's Tavern temporarily closed.
