Brian Pendleton, a 38-year-old male, was a dedicated employee who had just celebrated his ten-year anniversary as a custodian at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia. Known for his punctuality, he would always arrive early for his 10:30 p.m. shift to ensure he was on time. On the evening of November 22, 2022, he was in the breakroom with his colleagues before his shift began when a manager, Andre Bing, entered and opened fire on the employees gathered for a meeting.
Brian was one of the six people tragically killed in the mass shooting.
Remembered by his mother as a 'happy-go-lucky guy' who loved his family and friends, Brian was known for his kind and generous spirit. His mother shared that he had a big heart and would readily buy lunch for anyone who wanted company. She mentioned that he had experienced some difficulties with the shooter, his supervisor, who she said 'just didn't like my son.' On the night of the shooting, Brian had called his mother before heading to work, a routine they shared. That would be their last conversation.
The perpetrator of the shooting, 31-year-old Andre Bing, was armed with a handgun and multiple magazines. After killing six of his coworkers and injuring several others, Bing turned the gun on himself and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Because the suspect died by suicide, there were no arrests made in connection with Brian Pendleton's death. The incident was a murder-suicide, leaving the community to mourn the senseless loss of life.
