In the early morning hours of January 29, 2021, the typically quiet Preston Trails apartment complex in the Churchland area of Chesapeake, Virginia, was disrupted by a fatal shooting. Responding to reports of a disturbance at approximately 1:09 a.m., Chesapeake police discovered a grim scene in the 3500 block of Towne Point Road. Inside one of the apartments, they found 26-year-old Kerry W. Eaton, Jr., a Black male, deceased from gunshot wounds.
