In the afternoon hours of a Sunday in Suffolk, Virginia, the life of 30-year-old Corey Lovell Baker was tragically cut short. On November 4, 2018, emergency services received a call about a shooting at approximately 2:30 p.m. and responded to the 1000 block of Nansemond Parkway. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Baker, who had been fatally shot.
Despite any life-saving efforts that may have been attempted, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Authorities identified 21-year-old Tavarus A. Gray, Jr., also of Suffolk, as the individual they believed to be responsible for the death of Corey Baker. It was reported that the two men were acquainted with each other and that a verbal altercation had occurred before the shooting. Following the incident, Gray allegedly fled the scene in a white panel van before law enforcement arrived. Warrants were promptly issued for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
A search for Tavarus A. Gray, Jr. was launched, and it concluded shortly after midnight on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. He was taken into custody without incident. Following his arrest, Gray was transported to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail, where he was held without bond. The Suffolk Police Department had asked for the public's assistance in locating him, and it was noted that information from the community was helpful in identifying the suspect early in the investigation.
