In the early hours of a May morning in 2022, the life of 31-year-old Rufus 'Skoota' Lindell Artis was tragically cut short. The male victim was found deceased at the scene of a shooting that unfolded just after midnight at the Hoffler Apartments on East Washington Street in Suffolk, Virginia. Another individual, an 18-year-old male, was also injured in the incident but was expected to recover.
The Suffolk Police Department's investigation into the homicide led to the arrests of two
suspects. Nathaniel 'Nate' Mitchell Jr., 18 years old at the time, was taken into custody and faced a slew of charges, including first-degree murder, eight counts of discharging a firearm in public, two counts of malicious wounding, and conspiracy to commit a felony, in addition to three firearm-related charges.
A second suspect, 19-year-old Khalil Johnson, was also apprehended and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a felony. The motive for the shooting, as stated by law enforcement, was believed to be gang-related.
The shooting that claimed Artis's life was not an isolated event in the area. In the week leading up to this fatal incident, another shooting had occurred at the same apartment complex, leaving a teenager with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities were investigating a possible connection between the two events, which had left the community on edge and residents expressing their concerns about the escalating violence.
