In the winter of 2018, a fatal shooting in Newport News, Virginia, claimed the life of 44-year-old Larry Hartwell Vick Jr. The incident unfolded in the early afternoon of December 22, at the intersection of 22nd Street and Oak Avenue. Emergency services received a call about the shooting at approximately 12:37 p.m. and, upon arrival, discovered Vick with a single gunshot wound to the upper left side of his torso.
Vick, a resident of North Carolina, was treated at the scene by first
responders and then quickly transported to a local hospital for further medical attention. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The investigation into his death began immediately, with Newport News Police canvassing the area for evidence and witnesses.
Witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee the scene on foot, heading in a southeast direction. The individual was described as a Black man wearing a black skullcap, a camouflage-style jacket, and white painter's pants. In an effort to generate leads, the Newport News Police Department released a video of a person of interest in January 2019. The video showed an individual matching the description provided by those at the scene.
Despite the release of the video and ongoing investigative efforts, no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation into the death of Larry Hartwell Vick Jr. remains active, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward. His family and friends have been left to mourn his sudden and violent death as they await answers and justice.
